Last year, approximately in this period, I had opportunity to talk with one of the greatest name of aesthetic surgery, professor T Biggs. I heard many stories and saw many photographs during those two hours, but I also managed to ask him one, for me important, question. How to determine correct size of implant in augmentation?

His answer was quite interesting. He told me that at the beginning of his career he had 4 types of breast implants- small, medium, large and extra large; while in this moment „Mentor” alone has over 400 models for breasts. He didn’t stop answering there, but I also didn’t receive any “recipe” for choosing an implant.

At that time I largely relied on my feeling about how breasts should look like and how big they should be, but the choice came down to 5-6 models.

That figure of 400 models was bothering me. Can we really decide among such number of different implants, which will be the right one or is that a whole “family” of implants with similar characteristics? Will any implant give good result? Answer slowly emerged during my conversation with colleagues from different meridians, from Moscow, Mumbai, Istanbul, London, and Cluj. Each of them had its own method of size determination. One chose “what people want”, others relay on measuring, while some chose the cheapest on the market. One thing mutual for all was respect for aesthetic standards of the region they come from. Thus, similar sizes of implants, mainly of 300 to 500 ccm are used in Switzerland, Germany and Serbia, while in USA sizes even go up to 3000ccm.

In my practice, most commonly used implants are from the group Round High, with volumes from 325 to 450 ccm, but it doesn’t mean that some other implants are not suitable for you. I am known to prefer “small” implants, or more precisely, smaller than those some of my colleagues offer. Anatomic implants are currently popular, but round ones also keep their position.

The best way to determine adequate size of an implant is the visual one- woman tries on a demo implant, stands in front of a mirror and chooses the one that looks the best. It is up to the surgeon then, to realize all that within next few hours and makes the most beautiful possible breasts 🙂
